The Gator & The Croc

Materials and Processing was all about learning soft goods. For class we were taught how to sew and then instructed to design and sew a single or double tent. My goal was to create not only one tent but two tents with a similar style and purpose, but one would be for a single and one would before a double. With one design I wanted to create something that was softer and more organic. And the other design I wanted to be sharper in nature and more geometric.

What do People Want?

When some one is looking for a backpacking tent what are they looking for? How are they going to use the tent? Are they going to be in cold climates? How light should it be?

Inspiration

What can I Follow

Alligators, crocodiles, butterflies, and caterpillars were all things from nature that helped spark some ideas. I loved the organic shaped of the caterpillars and butterfly body that mimic a shrinking tube shape. Then the alligator and crocodile showed something my rigid in nature, something geometric.

Sketching

Discovering the Form

In my form I wanted to find a format that would work both geometrically and organically. I wanted something that would be visually different, but identify as a group.

Modeling & Creating

When it came time to create the design, I modeled the tents in rhino. Once the designs were complete the layout of the tent was extracted and use to cut flat piece for sewing. Each piece was lined up and stitched together. After the sewing was complete, the final touches were added to the tents.
